Five Things That Matter with Eamonn Campbell '07
Cultivating a life of curiosity can sometimes seem like a hazy concept. What actually comes from being curious? For Eamonn Campbell ’07, his thirst for knowledge helped him pursue various threads of interest, from athletics to science to law. Eamonn’s genuine interest in the world around him has served him well.
In October of this year, Eamonn brought his innate curiosity to the set of Jeopardy, where he became a two-time champion on the show. Eamonn’s performance earned him a spot in the Jeopardy Champions Wildcard Tournament, which will air in January 2025. When Eamonn was introduced on the show, he said he insisted on being introduced as “originally from Manchester, Vermont.”
For those of us associated with Burr and Burton over the past 20, 50, or even 100 years, Eamonn’s insistence on being identified as of and from this place is understandable:  his family’s ties to the area and to Burr and Burton span back to the beginning. He is the youngest of four Campbell siblings to graduate from Burr and Burton Academy, following Tison Campbell ’99, Cailen Campbell McCormick ’02, and Anders Campbell ’05, as well as his Burr and Burton alumni parents Ed Campbell ’70 and Lynne Campbell ’75

Louise Simonds Orvis (1890) – original Woman of Winter
Throughout the early 20th century, the name Louise Simonds Orvis was synonymous with growth and business in the Manchester area. After graduating from Burr and Burton Seminary in 1890, Louise married George Orvis, a son of Franklin Orvis, founder of the Equinox House (predecessor of The Equinox Resort).
After her husband George died in 1917, Louise continued to run the Equinox House for the next 20 years. In her capacity as the owner of the Equinox House, Louise directed golf course designer Walter J. Travis to design the new golf course for the Equinox Links Club (current location of the The Golf Club at the Equinox). Louise was the first woman to vote in Manchester, and was the president of Manchester Village for many years.
Louise was part of a core group of community members who founded the Winter Sports Club (predecessor to the Bromley Outing Club) who envisioned turning the area into a four-season destination. Fred Pabst Jr., grandson of the famous German-American beer brewer Captain Frederick Pabst, came to visit Manchester to further promote his efforts in bringing skiing to the masses. This led to Manchester's first winter carnival held in 1936, which featured a dog sled race, a bobsled trail on Barnumville Road, skating on the flooded tennis courts behind the Equinox House, with a dance in the Burr and Burton gymnasium (current Riley Center for the Arts). Ski races were held on the lower slopes of Deer Knoll on Mount Equinox, and the first rope tow was installed in Manchester at the foot of Union Street on Battenkill up to the Equinox Golf Course by Pabst. Fred would open a j-bar lift in East Dorset at the foot of Mt. Aeolus the following year, and by 1938, set his sights on Bromley Mountain.
Once Pabst opened Bromley in 1938 with a vision of bringing affordable skiing to the masses, Louise helped make the fledgling ski resort a success. In 1948, Jack Ortleib, owner of both the Bromley House in Peru, and the Charles Orvis Inn, along with Pabst, created the Louise Orvis Trophy Race to honor their friend.
The race was a FIS (International Ski Federation) level race, which drew the most talented racers from around the world. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame inductee Marilyn Cochran of the legendary Vermont Cochran ski racing family won in 1967 and 1968. At one time, the Louise Orvis Trophy Race was the oldest consecutive race in the country, phasing out in the 1970s.

From the Archives is a quarterly column in The Belltower Alumni Newsletter.
