EAST MONTPELIER — After coming home victorious in week one, the U-32 Raiders were brought back to reality by Burr and Burton Academy on Friday. While the Raiders were able to grind out yards on the ground, the balanced offense of the Bulldogs chewed up the U-32 defense en route to a 62-16 victory. After the home team turned the ball over on downs, BBA wasted little time connecting on a pair of passes that ended with Jake Baker finding the end zone to make it 7-0. On the next series, the Raiders were forced to punt and once more did little defensively to stop BBA quarterback Joey McCoy from finding his favorite target Baker for a big reception. Their second drive finished just as quickly as the previous one as John Morgantini swept left and found the end zone nearly untouched to make it 14-0. The Bulldogs managed to put up their first two touchdowns in less than three minutes. It was a theme repeated throughout the night. On BBA’s next possession, Baker found the end zone after getting a huge block that allowed him to catch the corner and rumble 47 yards, breaking away from the chasing Raider defense. “He’s a really good player and we have to find creative ways to keep him involved,” BBA coach Jason Thomas said of Baker. “I wasn’t sure what we were going to get today. We had a JV game early this week and we only suited up 33 tonight.” Midway through the second quarter, the Bulldogs put the game away. McCoy dropped back and hit Morgantini for a 61-yard touchdown pass to make it 41-0. U-32’s best chance to get into the game came on the following drive when quarterback Nathan LaRosa hit Michael Bove down the sideline for a big pickup. The drive was halted two plays later when LaRosa was intercepted by Bulldog Mason Snide with the Raiders threatening on the five-yard line. The Bulldogs would add their seventh touchdown of the night to make it 48-0 by halftime. “We went in at halftime and started working on things,” U-32 coach Brian Divelbliss said. “We had to reinvent ourselves a little bit there. Burr and Burton is a real good, well-coached team with a bunch of good athletes. We just went back out and worked on the little things because we knew we couldn’t fix everything all at once.” The Bulldogs continued their dominance in the second half as Baker once more ran roughshod over the Raider defense, hanging his fourth touchdown of the evening up on their first drive of the half to make it 55-0. U-32’s Andrew Proteau scored on a five-yard run up the middle and then caught the two-point conversion. BBA spent the rest of the evening resting their starters. Aldenio Garwood’s late score made it 62-8 in favor of BBA. Proteau scored his second touchdown late with Carter Pelzel completing the two-point conversion. Burr and Burton (2-0) welcomes Bellows Falls next Saturday. U-32 (1-1) travels to play Spaulding the same day.
