On Thursday November 7th, the French Language and Cultures students had the opportunity to meet French filmmaker Alice Diop during a Bennington College talk. She was accompanied by her editor, Amrita David and translator, Nicholas Elliot. Diop is a French screenwriter and director from a Senegalese family. The French class had recently studied her documentary Nous (We), a delicate portrait of fundamentally different communities living along the RER B train that traverses the Paris suburbs.
Mark your calendar: Author, Speaker, Storyteller and Sexuality Educator Cindy Pierce is coming to Burr and Burton to speak with students and parents about social courage, social media and screen time, online influences, and hookup culture and consent. The parent event will be on Monday, November 18th at 6:30 in the Riley Center for the Arts.
The Radium Girls company was fortunate to be visited by guest teaching artist Mary Bacon who originated the role of Grace Fryer in D.W. Gregory's Radium Girls, produced by Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey and developed with a commissioning grant from The Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project. In addition to sharing her experience, Mary also had a conversation with the cast about the importance of collaboration in the creative process, and what the life of a performing artist is like in NYC, and beyond.
On Monday, Wellness classes participated in a full day of wellness programming at the BBA Mountain Campus. More than 80 9th graders spent the entire day up on the mountain participating in wellness-focused workshops with faculty.
On Tuesday during flex block the Environmental Club hosted it's first clothing swap of the year! Organizers Dahlia Cohn and Nell Bryant were excited with the turnout and enjoyed engaging the community in this impactful and fun exchange: "Its a sustainability effort that both excites and unites the whole BBA community! It’s an accessible opportunity for people to explore and experiment with their personal styles without supporting fast fashion. It’s an event in which there’s no money involved, everyone is welcome, and everyone gets a chance to take clothing or donate their old things."

This October, the Honors Government and Politics Course is practicing civic engagement face-to-face with state and local candidates running for election and reelection.
Social Studies Teacher Jillian Joyce explains that this year, Honors Government and Politics looks a little different from other years: “In an election year, the political component really comes to the forefront with students researching candidates and inviting them in to speak to our class.”
Page to Stage has had an amazing month at BBA. The newly created class, team-taught by Peter Nicholson and Jim Raposa explores the synergy that occurs when writing moves from the page to the stage.
Santana School exchange students arrived at Burr and Burton Academy on Monday, 9/16. This three week exchange provides Santana and BBA students the opportunity to live with a host family for two weeks and then travel for the last week.
We are excited about our 9th annual, student-led retreat on Sunday, September 15th. The goal of the Bulldog Leadership Summit is to create a community of student leaders who use their influence as leaders to transform the culture of Burr and Burton so that integrity, selflessness, and respect for everybody is embraced.
On Monday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. the Burr and Burton School Counseling Office will host our Annual Fall College Night in Founders Hall. This year our keynote speaker will be Sue Willard, the Associate Director of Admissions at Hobart and William Smith. Sue will provide insight into the college search and decision process before the counselors provide topical information relevant to the specific grades in attendance.

I hope you're all enjoying your summer break! I wanted to remind you about BBA's summer reading requirement and where you can find copies of the books. Everyone in grades 9 - 12 will pick one book from the Summer Reading List to read over the summer. When we return in the fall we will meet in groups to discuss the books. It’s finals week at UMass Amherst, and Grace Pinkus ’20 is eagerly awaiting what will essentially be her first traditional graduation on May 18, where she will earn a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. As with all 2020 high school graduates, Covid restrictions derailed her high-school graduation experience. Ironically, our meeting was on Zoom - a platform, Grace said, with which she was very familiar.
The Environmental Club hosted a variety workshops and guest speakers on Monday, April 22nd to learn more about local environmental issues. There were over 600 participants in the day's activities!
Clement Martini ‘26, Sam Cole ’24, Alec Vartanitan ‘27, and Frasier Bergman ‘27 of Burr and Burton Academy have ranked nationally in the 89th annual event, according to Lisa Narug, National Director of Le Grand Concours. Martini received a Gold medal at Level 5, Cole received a Bronze medal at Level 3, and Vartanian and Bergman received Bronze medals at Level 2. Twelve additional BBA students (Alli Aubin, Nora Ward, Olav Pajala, Hazel Cornwell, Dahlia Cohn, Pengju Sui, Reagan Healy, Delphine Dobbleman, Luna Raso, Zach Lindenberg, Robin LaConte, and Jacob Honigsfeld) received Honorable Mentions at various levels.
The much-anticipated Art From the Schools show at the Southern Vermont Arts Center will have its Grand Opening Celebration on Sat., April 27 from 2:00-4:00 PM.

Hearing from local professionals in their fields of interest (YOU!) is impactful - not only in helping them think about possible future goals, but in helping them explore those options now. Learning from you can help guide students toward various high school courses and potential internships and part-time jobs.
We're excited to be building on the success of last year's event. If your organization has openings for summer jobs or full-time careers, feel free to bring your materials along to share with interested students.

The Burr & Burton Academy Music Department will present a Spring Concert Tuesday, April 9rd, 5:30 p.m. in the Riley Center for the Arts. The performance will showcase a diverse menu of music presented by various instrumental and vocal ensembles.
BBA senior and Student Council president, Chris Alfano recently returned from Washington, D.C. where he was one of two students chosen to represent Vermont at the 62nd annual United States Senate Youth Program. The program was a weeklong experience in Washington, D.C., where he met with some of the top officials in the U.S. federal government.
Every year BBA students have the chance to experience Washington, DC and learn for a week through the Close Up program. Students meet Senators Sanders and Welch, Rep. Becca Balint, visit the Pentagon, and enjoy many of Washington’s best museums and monuments during a week of school in the nation's Capitol.
The Visual Art Department is proud to announce the Senior Spotlight Show at Yesterhouse on the campus of SVAC on Saturday, March 9 from 2:00-4:00 PM. We will be celebrating the advanced artwork by BBA, Long Trail School, and Arlington High School Seniors with a festive opening which is free and open to all!
At the end of this year, Kathi (Frost) Bierwirth ’81 will retire from Burr and Burton Academy after nearly 40 years of teaching, coaching, leading and supporting students. Kathi has the rare gift of being a person who always knew that she wanted to make Burr and Burton her life’s work.
Burr and Burton Performing Arts presents the international smash phenomenon and Tony and Grammy Award-nominated Mamma Mia! on March 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 at 6:30 pm with an additional matinee on March 23rd at 2 pm in the Riley Center for the Arts.
The BBA Model UN team attended the Yale Model UN Conference last weekend. Many students were attending their first ever conference, and I was grateful to see their hard work paying off--meeting and working with 2000 interesting and talented peers from 200 schools and 40 countries.
This semester, Burr and Burton is excited to participate in Poetry Out Loud, a national arts education and recitation contest. Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. If you're interested in learning more about Poetry Out Loud, ask your English or Humanities teacher for more information.

Erin Norton a BBA Alum Class of 2021, and a Creative Writing Student at Emerson College Class of 2025 is excited to share that an original play of theirs will be produced as a full-scale production in the springtime at Emerson College. She is thankful that at BBA she was able to follow her passion and appreciates being able to explore and find her passion for acting a playwriting through all that BBA offers.

Riley Vogel a BBA Alum Class of 2021, and Alum of Roosevelt University '22 with a BFA in Musical Theater is proud to be appearing as Cosmo Brown in Singin' In The Rain at the Waterfront Playhouse in Key West, FLA. Just 6 weeks after graduating from BBA, Riley appeared in A Chorus Line as Larry produced by the Bucks County Center for the Performing Arts in Doylestown, PA. With his home base in Chicago, Riley has been working constantly since his graduation in 2022 throughout the United States.
Earlier this month, former Headmaster Robert Kennedy passed away at age 78. Kennedy spent 15 years as the Headmaster of Burr and Burton from 1978-1993. During his tenure, Kennedy stewarded Burr and Burton through several fundraising campaigns and academic improvements. He was known to his students as an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.
